XR400, Mikuni TM36 Jetting
I just installed a used Mikuni TM36 pumper carb. The bike isn't running as strong as other XR400's with new pumper carbs. I'm sure I need to adjust the jetting and pumper settings. The bike starts after a few kicks. When hitting the gas hard around idle, I'm still getting a slight bog. Also, a slight popping when backing off the throttle.

CRF front fender on xr400
michigan400. Posted May 12, 2012. I used 08 450X polisport from rmatv. Trimmed 3" or so off the back and shimmed back mounts until it cleared frame. The '96 400 I am currently riding was revalved/resprung by Pro-Action in '97 for enduro type riding,180# rider, still works great has needed only two sets of fork seals since. Several years ago, I had a professionaly built XR440 woods bike with suspension by Factory Connection, probably the best handling XR I ever owned.

'01 XR400 jetting?
Just, drain the gas, remove the float bowl, and swap the jets. Once you start opening up the exhaust, you can go up in jet sizes. 58 to 62 pilot and 158 to 162 main. The CA model comes with a different needle. You want the A16A needle. To change the needle, you need to remove the carb.

XR 400 best big fuel tank?
Posted November 15, 2013. I am looking at getting a big tank to do a trip on the XR. Also looking at getting a Roto Pak for the rear rack just to be sure. But I was thinking of getting an IMS brand or Clarke. As I had a Acerbis one years ago (think it was a multi fit xr600) and really didn't rate the fitment.

Xr400 clarke 3.8 to stock tank comparison
Thanks. the tank itself fit "ok" but the overall finish of the tank was pretty bad compared to the factory tank. So I actually sanded off all the seams and re polished the tank so you can't see any join marks on it. After doing that I'm actually really pleased with it. Plus personally I think the oversize tank looks better than the stock.

The major difference between stock XR 400 and a modified 280 is that the 400 has a lot more low end torque but the 280 is lighter feeling. Too me it wouldn't be worth it to change up from 280 to the 400 power wise unless you were spend $$$ on 426/440 kits, cam, etc. to greatly boost power.
